Entering the Kingdom

Entering the spiritual dimension known as the “Kingdom of Heaven” was the key focus of Jesus in Matthew, Mark and Luke.  It is not an easy concept to define and Jesus used parables to try and describe it to open our minds to the possibility of what it is. However, there are also a clearly set out series of verses in Matthew which do tell us about the Kingdom and how important it is.  And then when Jesus returns in Acts for 40 days we are told he spends these 40 days specifically teaching about the Kingdom rather than anything else – so the Kingdom teachings are significant, but often neglected or hidden. However, the importance of them has been seen by spiritual seekers and writers throughout the centuries.

Quotes

Allan Chronshaw – “Jesus came to us and said: There is another world that exists where man can dwell in paradise. He then said that, if you believe me, and have faith in me, I can guide you along the path that will take you to this other world. “

Adyshanti – “This deeper dimension is what Jesus’s message was all about. It was all about the deeper dimension of Spirit, of eternity, shining through the world of time and space, meaning this world, right here, right now. That’s what he was concerned with, that’s what he was interested in, that’s what he brought forth.”
Rev Scott McKenna – “As a teacher of the inner journey, of soul transformation, Jesus taught that freedom from the oppression and violence of the world was directly related to freedom from our own inner bonds of hatred, greed, insecurity and fear. Jesus taught that mutual indwelling, communion with the Divine, was central to our inner journey and central to our transformation of the world around us.  In the Gospel of Luke, we hear Jesus say, ‘The kingdom of God is within you.’  God’s dream, that place of sacred beauty, of shalom, is within you.”
Roberta Grimes – “If even as few as ten percent of us will elevate our own level of consciousness now, we will be raising every human being’s level of consciousness together with our own. We will begin a benevolent cycle that will end with the establishment on earth of what Jesus called the Kingdom of Heaven, where the energy of perfect love is so strong that at last we will have put into practice the second line of the Lord’s Prayer: “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (MT 6: 10).”

Entering the Kingdom

Apart from the Kingdom being very important for us to seek, Jesus sets out a way for us to enter into it – essentially by “doing the will of the Father”.  Since Jesus comes to reveal the nature of the Father we can assume that we do the will of the Father by following Jesus’s commands.  The central ones of these Jesus tells us are to love God, love our neighbour, love our enemy, to forgive, be merciful, not judge, not be angry or anxious.  The extent to which we follow these is the extent to which we enter into the Kingdom as a spiritual reality, within us and all around us.

The Kingdom and Metanoia

The greek word Metanoia or Metanoeo was used in combination with some of the earliest references to the Kingdom of Heaven at the start of Jesus’s teachings: From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “[Μετανοεῖτε – Metanoeite], for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17) “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom […]
